Your waitress is well presented, her uniform ironed, her hair out of her face, no piercings in sight and a smile on her face. She has bright red hair though ; would that put you off?
Apparently my work thinks it would. According to higher up management and their “no outrageous hairstyles or colours” policy - my hair is offensive. The fact that I am a very mild mannered and nice person seems not to matter in the issue. I was hired eight months ago with this hair colour, and now it’s coming back to kick me in the face, and I’ve been told I shouldn’t have been hired in the first place. Is it just me or is this so wrong? I was told today it isn’t acceptable since it is a family restaurant, and I am expected to appear a certain way ; so are they saying as a company that they wouldn’t serve someone with bright hair? That that wouldn’t be the kind of person they would want in their “family” orientated restaurant? My options are to change my hair to a natural colour and then I can continue working there, or to keep the hair I have and not receive shifts, go through disciplinary after disciplinary until it results in the loss of my job, or give in my notice. What would you do?
It might sound silly to some readers, but my hair is my confidence. I am, and always have been fat, I know - my own fault, I don’t expect sympathy there, but because of this I’ve never exactly been confident about my body, and I wouldn’t say I’m all that attractive either. My hair though, for some reason that gives me so much confidence, such a fun colour, a colour I’ve wanted since I was little and seen all my dads friends with their brightly coloured mohawks. I don’t feel like it would be right to trade in my confidence, what I love about myself, and my principals for the sake of keeping a job.
I love working in my work, I have met some totally brilliant folk from working there, and it’s a good laugh. I really hate that these are the options it has come down to, and that something as ridiculous as a hair colour has caused all this hassle.
So I ask you again, would you be offended by this waitress? And what would you do if you were in my place?
